Online education vs traditional education
IS ONLINE EDUCATION A COMPARABLE SUBSTITUTE TO TRADITIONAL, IN-PERSON EDUCATION?
Sir Ken Robinson once said, “Given the challenges we face, education doesn't need to be reformed — it needs to be transformed.” We been blindly following the traditional model of dispensing information, when even a toddler can obtain answers from the internet to satiate their curiosity.
The traditional school curriculum is so limited, while the repertoire of online education is limitless. There are infinite skills and subjects to teach and learn on the internet. From learning to cook potatoes, to solving complex algebraic equations- there is something for everyone on the net.
Comparing the rigidity
of traditional schooling with flexibility of online education, it is truly shocking that it took us and entire pandemic to rake up this debate. Can we even compare
the flexibility and customizability of online learning to its counterpart?
When we lie in the age of A.R. and V.R., our learning material needs to keep pace. With online education, even the configuration of the class size is flexible. On-demand lectures provide the ultimate convenience to both teachers and students, and impart valuable time management skills. Traditional schooling doesn’t even begin to compare to that.
Can slow learners rewind the lectures in a classroom? Can hesitant students freely ask their doubts in front of the peering eyes of their classmates? Not at all.
Not only that, even students living in remote areas can
access online education. Another great benefit is the multi-cultural
perspectives and the multi-disciplinary exposure it provides.
The last nail in the coffin of the debate is the economic
aspect. The time and cost-saving of online education is just the pill required
to alleviate the financial burden of millions who invest their lifetime savings
for overpriced, traditional education.
I believe it is now high time to change an archaic education system introduced during the British Raj that, today, serves neither them nor us.
